Do a group activity and discuss what makes a successful college student.

• What are some important lessons about succeeding in college that you learned during your first week?
• What does a successful college student do in class?
• Outside of class?

Discussion of documentary

• What was something you learned from the film?
• What was surprising about the stories featured in A Place at the Table?
• What was the impact of seeing & hearing the personal stories of a handful of individuals?
• In what ways is seeing a film like reading a text?

If time remains, we will add to our arsenal of reading strategies by taking a look at Text Structures.

Homework

Remember that your first journal assignment is due by midnight Tuesday, September 3!
