Class Plan for Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Introductions & “Mugshots”
Let’s get to know each other!
Today we will get into small groups and learn a little bit about each other. I will also provide a notecard on which you will write your name on one side and anything you’d like me to know about you. Please also include at least one academic goal you have for this semester.
What does “Class Participation” mean to you?
Class participation is a crucial component of your experience (and grade) in this class. Let’s discuss some helpful ways to think about class participation.
For example, have you ever been on a sports team or pursued any fitness goals? How did you improve or accomplish success in those endeavors? Did it happen overnight? Did you do it completely by yourself?
Chances are, the answers are no. Self-improvement, including becoming a stronger student and professional, involves sustained commitment over a period of time.
In this class, there are two important ways in which you’ll need to participate:
- Investing yourself (your time, energy, and attention). This looks like: regular attendance, taking in-class activities and assignments seriously (whether or not there is a grade attached to them), keeping track of important dates, setting aside distractions during class and when you’re doing homework, and being an active listener.
- What are some distractions you’ve coped with in the past?
- Why is it important to invest yourself in these ways?
- Working with others. This looks like: being an active participant in small group activities, contributing your ideas during class discussion, being open to learning from your peers and professors, and being a reliable group member when working on our upcoming Comparison Project (a.k.a., a group presentation that will occur toward the end of the semester).
- What do you think you will gain from working with others in these ways?
