“I Know“
Do you know?
Tiny Desk Feedback
I am halfway through grading the Tiny Desk Concert reviews. So far, I’ve noticed a few areas for improvement that are common across several reviews. You’ll want to consider these when you’re writing your concert reviews for Dr. Pool.
- Have you included specific observations about the sound of the music in your analysis of depth? While the lyrics are important, also think about the musical elements–how do they contribute to your interpretation of the music’s depth?
- Along these lines, think macro and micro. Macro elements may include the song’s meaning, chorus, overall mood–big picture stuff. You guys are great at this. Push yourself to pick up on micro things, too–the rasp of the signer’s voice, the delicate way the fiddle was picked, the way certain chords were accented…and then explain the effect. How do these musical choices enhance the performance? Which leads us to–
- Avoid “drop and roll.” Every single review so far has shared awesome observations about the music (macro and/or micro elements), but several “dropped” these observations and “rolled” away without explained what they meant. Don’t roll away! Take your time to explain your meaning.
Preparing Proposals
Today, we will be working on our Proposals. Please bring one laptop per group. Preferably, you will have your song selection already, but if your group is still struggling with song selection, we can finalize your selection in class.
Please review the proposal guidelines and the sample proposal. You can find the guidelines on our Seminar Bb page > Shared Assignments > Comparison project. There is a link to the sample proposal in the instructions.
Homework
Due In-Class on Thursday, Feb. 6: A hardcopy of your group proposal (I just need one doc. per group).
