Finding recordings of your art song
Make sure you are able to find a recording of your art song. Please review your art song assignment & research questions here. You are welcome to use any listening platform that you choose. If you’re having trouble finding your art song on your platform of choice, try to find it on Naxos.
Let’s discuss any questions you have about your assigned song(s).
Recapping our library visit
Here’s a quick link to the landing page for our learning community’s library page.
Remember that library research involves a lot of trial and error. If you don’t find something the first time around, try a different search method (using different search filters, using different keywords, being more or less specific.)
Let’s review!
- Credo Reference – Great for finding encyclopedia entries that give you historical background and biographical information about your art song composer and possibly your contemporary artist. (Wikipedia is a good place to get info on contemporary artists that are not found on Credo). Note: Limit your search to longer articles; these will give you more information!
- Break down your research question(s) into smaller questions or search terms. Also, consider the period during which your art song was composed (even if the name of the period wasn’t mentioned in the question).
- Books on a given topic will tend to be more general while scholarly articles tend to be more specific. Consider using both to inform yourselves.
- It doesn’t hurt to also check Google, especially if you’re looking for more information on a value of the period during which your art piece was composed, such as “heroic loneliness,” “humanism,” or “neoclassicism.”
- When doing a search in the library’s search bar, use the “more search options” (right below the search bar) to customize your search.
Note:
- Change “all fields” to “subject headings.”
- Type artist name
- Type name of the song, then press the plus button
- Then type themes using “OR” to separate terms
