About Mary
. . .
Hi! My name is Mary Hood Luttrell, and I’m so excited to be your Seminar instructor this semester! You may call me Mary, Professor Hood, or Professor Luttrell (whichever you are most comfortable with). Hood is my maiden name, and Luttrell is my married name, and I am still known by and answer to both.
I have been living in Corpus Christi and working at TAMU-CC for six years. I grew up in Charlotte, NC and received my BA in English from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. I also took classes in French, Art History, and Dance. I got my MA in English at the University of Oregon where I focused on contemporary poetry. Although I miss the other places I’ve lived, I feel so lucky to be a part of the Island University. This is a really special place <3
Since graduating with my MA, I have been working as a Beauty Editor and Creative Director for the online lifestyle magazine Peaceful Dumpling while contributing writing to other online publications, including Vilda Magazine, The Everygirl, and Martha Stewart. I have also taught first-year composition and worked as a consultant at the CASA Writing Center (one of my favorite spots on campus!).
While there are many things to love about teaching, I’m especially driven to help students navigate the sometimes daunting world of academia–in and out of the classroom. I’m also passionate about helping students find their writing voices, regardless of major. Students inspire me when they find ways to help each other persevere through the challenges of college life. That’s a huge part of what learning communities are about!
When I’m not working, I love playing with daughter, Lila, who is two-years-old. I also enjoy cooking plant-based food, exercising (I like Yoga, Pilates & Barre), collecting vintage perfume, writing poetry, reading (my favorite authors are Joan Didion, Louise Gluck, and Joyce Carol Oates), and … drinking coffee!
I’m looking forward to spending the semester with you. We’re going to have a great time!
P.S. For ways to get in touch with me outside of class, please see my Office Hours & Contact Info.
