First-Year Islander Virtual Conference – 2020
What is the FYI Virtual Conference?
The FYI Virtual Conference is designed to take the place of the FYI Conference: College to Career that was planned for April of SP 2020. Because the university is no longer able to host a traditional in-person conference due to the transition to online learning, the First-Year Program is curating a website to feature student work from the Learning Communities.
The conference will be asynchronous, meaning that there won’t be any live sessions to virtually attend, allowing everyone to participate in their own time. Student work will be published on a password-protected site.
Do students have to do extra work?
No. The work you’ve already completed for your learning community is eligible for the conference. If you are interested in having your work featured and you’ve given us your permission to publish your work, your professors will organize the documents needed.
If you haven’t done so already, please fill out the following survey, and let us know whether or not you’d like your work to be featured:
Music Appreciation Survey for the Online Conference
You will still be able to view the site even if you do not have your work submitted.
What are the benefits of having student work featured in the virtual conference?
–Sharing student’s best work with a larger audience.
–Seeing what other learning communities have focused on–and learn something new!
–Students who participate can list their participation on a résumé when applying to a job, research position, or internship.
–Participating is a lovely way to show support for the Islander community.
What work is being considered from Triad AM?
Dr. Pool, Professor Burnett, and I are considering using the mid-term reflections, some of graded discussion forum submissions in MUSI 1306, and final reflections. The three of us have been so impressed with the work this learning community has produced, especially given the circumstances of the semester. We admire the depth of thought you’ve shown in your work.
When can we see the conference?
The LC will work to get submissions ready in the beginning of May. We expect that the site will be ready by the end of the semester.
