The Midterm Reflection for Learning Community AM
. . .
Are You Classical or Romantic in Nature?
Due: Friday, March 6 by 11:59 PM in Bb > Reflections > Midterm Reflection
For your midterm reflection, you are going to work with two different conceptual fields: the classical vs. romantic binary and the Habits of Mind.
Let’s break this down. No doubt, you are now familiar with the different characteristics of the classical and romantic eras. Analyze yourself to determine whether you are one or the other or, perhaps, a hybrid of the two in temperament. Please use terminology from the Era vs. Era worksheet to support the claims you are making about your temperament and how it affects your life in college, both academically and socially.
Habits of Mind
From Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing (2011):
Habits of mind refers to ways of approaching learning that are both intellectual and practical and that will support students’ success in a variety of fields and disciplines.
As you write, you will need to incorporate the following Habits of Mind terms:
Two of the eight Habits of Mind:
- Responsibility – the ability to take ownership of one’s actions and understand the consequences of those actions for oneself and others
- Engagement – a sense of investment and involvement in learning
You will need to discuss how engagement and responsibility figures in your life as a person with a Classical, Romantic, or a hybrid of the two sensibilities!
The Prompt:
Establish who you are in terms of the Classical/Romantic binary. Reflect on how this sensibility is affecting your life both socially and academically.
Do you believe you are a responsible and engaged student? Why or why not? How does your classical/romantic/or hybrid nature impact who you are as a first-year student at TAMUCC? Identify areas that are your strengths and weaknesses.
Discuss your responsibility and engagement as a college student inside and outside of our learning community (LC), using specific evidence from your own class participation, assignments, exam performance, and social experiences on campus and in the community.
Conclude by looking forward. Provide a plan for responsible and engaged behaviors that will help you move forward in the second half of the semester and is suited to your unique personality and Classical, Romantic, or Hybrid nature.
The Twist to the Prompt: Though you are constructing a bona fide academic essay, you should be creative, using art, humor, personal photos, videos, and/or hyperlinks to enrich your essay and to display your classical or romantic sensibility!
Advice and Requirements:
- Honesty is always appreciated. It is okay to admit that you might not be as engaged and/or responsible as you (or I) would like you to be.
- Your reflection should be well-organized, with an introduction that includes a thesis statement, smooth transitions between well-defined paragraphs, and a satisfying conclusion. Students who do well on this type of reflection typically write at least 3 pages of written text!
- The evidence you provide should serve as proof of the claims you are making. Include specific examples in your discussion.
- APA format with a title page and running head. Do not provide an abstract. Your text should be 12-point, Times New Roman, and double-spaced with 1” margins. Save the file in Word or PDF format before you upload it.
